| Assam Flood |
Year after year it is the same story, Million of people get displaced in Assam and other North-East Indian states due to floods, precious humans live and animals lives are lost. I analyze the reason behind why these Assam floods happen? Since 1950, there have been 12 major floods, but in recent years the frequency of the floods has increased drastically.
Deforestation in the Brahmaputra area, the encroachment of floodplains, the location of Assam, poor maintenance of embankment, and climate changes are a few reasons. Embankments are also called Levee or Dykes.
With the onset of the monsoon, people face the problem of floods in different parts of the country. Assam and Bihar are particularly among the worst affected states from the natural fury. Assam and Bihar is not only facing the coronavirus pandemic but also the natural calamity disaster. water level in river Brahmaputra and Krishna continue to rise.
Even Bihar is battling with flood. A total of 4.6 lakh people are badly affected from 10 districts of Bihar. Close to half a million people in nearly a dozen districts in Bihar have been affected by the flood that has wit a swathe of destruction across the Northern parts of the state, the disaster management department said on Wednesday. All the affected people are just taken to relief camps for shelter.
There is a lot of damage that occurred and faced by the people all the roads are swept away, all the houses have been submerged and all the agricultural crops have been collapsed, there is heavy rain and the water level is just constantly rising.
Not only human 21 lakh domestic animals have also been affected by floodwater also crossed 90% of Kaziranga National Park and most of the animals have been died in this water along with this Tiger Reserve, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Manas National Park have also been affected.
Eventually, NDRF ( National Disaster Response Force) has been carrying out rescue operations in flood, affected areas of Assam in Barpeta. A total of 11 NDRF teams have been deployed across Assam. The teams are distributing masks and sanitizers.
These states continue to be on the edge because of its flood disaster and this has become an annual calamity Assam sees a major flood every year and every time lives are lost, millions of people get displaced, villagers, crops, infrastructures get destroyed. Million of people are forced to leave their homes. Not just this, the number of animal death has also been alarming. So, the Q arises here -
Q. Why does Assam face flood every year?
As we see most of the parts of India face the problem of earthquakes, landslide embankment, dams encroachment, bank erosion, melting of glaciers, etc proved to be the reason behind it.As we see most of them are natural disasters but still, we can find a solution for it by building strong dams, maintaining bank encroachment, creating enough space for water bodies, and reduction of deforestation and soil erosion.
As we know the Brahmaputra river is big and this river can't be tamed because this river not only carries water but a mixture of soil, clay, and nutrients i.e. Sediments. During the monsoon, this river carries 2.12 million metric tons of sediment every single day. In summer glaciers are getting melted and immediately it rains heavily in monsoons and from the last few years because of the cyclone the intensity of rainfall has increased.
* Here are some Solutions by which we can control the flood happening every year.
Due to which Assam suffers climate change is real, humans are making it worse. But we can change. As we see floods are not under our control. But controlling a flood from becoming a disaster is in our control.1. Create a sponge city i.e Try to adopt a rainwater harvesting technique.
2. Give rivers more space, so that rivers do not have a chance to overflow.
3. Plant as many trees as possible. i.e adapt Afforestation.
4. Try not to use many pesticides as it causes soil erosion.
5. There should be proper maintenance of the Dam area every year to avoid the flood.
