All these statues are believed to be 2300 years old. In the 3rd century, these islands were ruled by the Mauryan Empire [321 BCE - 185 BCE] by Ashoka. After that Hindu Silhara captured the Mumbai islands and ruled till the year 1343 and then Gujarat King Bahadur Shah captured Mumbai.
After then European and Portuguese people reached Mumbai.
Portuguese captured the Mumbai islands from Bahadur Shah. In the year 1534 Portuguese signed a treaty of Bassein with Muslim ruler Humanyun and Bahadur Shah. After the Portuguese started building various monuments in Mumbai. Britishers tried to captured the Mumbai islands but the Portuguese did not lose.
Portuguese decided to sell all the islands to the East India Company at leased for just 10 pounds and the development of the Mumbai islands started.
East India Company started connecting all the 7 islands.
At that time, the main headquarters of East India Company was in Surat. But in the year 1687 East India Company shifted its headquarters to Bombay and named it as Bombay Province.
As the company shifted here various employment opportunities were getting available. So people for work started migrating to Bombay and the population started growing very rapidly. In the year 1708 government decided to permanently connect all the 7 islands of Bombay.
Due to much population, government and private companies starting setting up their companies and factories.
It took almost 150 years to complete the project and the project was completed in 1845.
In 1853, the first railway route was made from Mumbai to Thane, and the railway was introduced.
In the early 20th century, the population of Mumbai had reached 1 Million. Second largest city in population after Calcutta.
Finally, in the year 1995, Bombay was renamed to "Mumbai."
